Early Childhood Conditions
According to Good vision for life, approximately one in five Australian children suffers from an undetected vision problem or requires ongoing assessment. Many children and parents are unaware there might be a problem. Good vision is crucial for a child’s educational, physical and social development, so it’s important to be aware of the possible signs of a vision problem to give every child the best chance of reaching their full potential.
As vision directs our actions, we recommend all children have a comprehensive eye examination prior to commencing school.
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
Amblyopia occurs if children’s eyes do not develop properly during infancy and early childhood. It typically only affects one eye, but sometimes reduced visual acuity can occur in both eyes. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical in minimising reduced vision. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the condition, but involves forcing the brain to pay attention to the images of the weaker eye so that vision in that eye gets stronger.
Strabismus
Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. The eye that is focused on an object can alternate and the condition may be constant or intermittent. The misaligned eye may be inward (esotropia/cross-eyed), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia) or downward (hypotropia).
Strabismus occurs when there are neurological or anatomical problems that interfere with the control and function of the extraocular muscles that control the eye position and movement. In some types of strabismus, vision training can be effective in improving eye alignment, as well as vision.
Unfortunately, many eye problems remain undetected as seeing clearly or reading 20/20 on the vision chart doesn’t mean that there aren’t any other underlying visual dysfunctions. Other vision problems we assess for include eye tracking, focusing ability and coordination of the two eyes. Ideally, the two eyes should work together as a team for optimal vision.
